Alma Duran is a renowned actress, but she no longer works as she used to. Unemployed for three years, she faces failure and financial hardship. Even so, she hasn’t lost her ability to reinvent herself. Living as a guest with her daughter, a doctor, and her son-in-law, a police chief, she intends to return to the stage with a production of The Cherry Orchard by Russian playwright Anton Chekhov.
Between giving acting lessons to a young aspiring actress and the impact her free-spirited, artistic nature has on the daily lives of the couple in crisis, Alma encounters a man in the building’s playground who claims to be Anton Chekhov. The two begin rehearsing the play and discussing the challenges of the contemporary world, blurring the boundaries between reality, fiction, the past, the present, and the future.
Inspired by the nuanced emotions of Chekhov’s works, An Orchard for Chekhov, by Pedro Brício, is an entertaining and poetic play that reflects on social tensions, violence, and intolerance.
